CARESCO History PREFACE The life of CARESCO has reached a turning point in 1997 and it is appropriate that its story should now be written to focus the thoughts of those concerned in planning its future on the qualities which have made it unique. It is in the hope that this story may strike a chord with people in other small communities that we have sought funding to make possible a wider publication. CARESCO gratefully acknowledges grant aid from Cambridgeshire County Council, the Allen Lane Foundation and the Chase Charity. It has been a privilege, as I researched this book, to think back on the hundreds of people who have influenced the story. It was impossible to name them all. Many of the users of our services do not even realise how much the organisation - and the community - owes to them. Other names, known in Sawtry, would mean little to the wider world. We thank you all. My particular gratitude is due to: - Kathy Jones, the present Organiser, for patiently reading innumerable drafts and responding patiently to urgent requests for background material; - to Ruth Hall, (Social Work Adviser of the Central Council for Education and Training in Social Work,) who grew up in Sawtry where her father was much-loved Head of the All-Age School which was succeeded by the Village College. Ruth maintained that a Case Study would be generally useful, and has made positive and creative comments on successive drafts. - to my husband Maurice, for providing background material on Village Colleges, and for tolerance during the writing process. - and to Zealah Gibbs who has been responsible for the book's final presentation.
