DATES CARESCO History 1982 July - Sawtry Parish Council appoints a Working Party to consider "Welfare Needs" September 15th - Inaugural Meeting of Sawtry Welfare Committee December 3rd - Open Meeting. Sawtry & District Care and Resource Organisation - CARESCO - formed. Constitution adopted. Committee appointed. 1983 January 24th - First meeting of the CARESCO Management Committee April - Sawtry Day Centre and Lunch Club run under CARESCO umbrella. September - Grant for one year from DHSS "Opportunities for Volunteering" scheme. September 21st - First Annual General Meeting. November 8th - Committee agrees on delivery of a "Welcome Pack" and discusses formation of "Neighbourhood Units." 1984 Committee agrees to include the 'Sawtry & District Car Share Service' within CARESCO. CRUSE group formed. March 1st - First meeting of the Alconbury Thursday Club. Grant from Opportunities for Volunteering (Age Concern Fund) Management Committee recommends payment of Honoraria to Day Centre Organisers & Deputies, Development Organiser & Treasurer, ((from OFV grant.) Day Centre meets on Thursdays at Sawtry Village College in addition to Wednesdays. Nearly New Thrift Shop opens. First Aid Course run by Red X for County Emergency Planning Department. 3 Committee Members qualify for Green Cards to drive the SVC Minibus. 5 members attend "Celebrating Volunteers" the Annual Conference of The Volunteer Centre in London. Open University Course P.650 'Caring for Elderly People ' starts with15 members (4 from Peterborough Age Concern.) December 10th - Meeting with Stuart Collins, Deputy Head of Spring Common Special School, about possible places for Special Children on Sawtry Summer Playscheme. 1985 First "Partners in Care" Conference held at Sawtry Village College. Good Neighbours Scheme - Help with gardening (by Young Farmers) , & a meal on a Sunday. Grant from "Help the Aged" for hand rails & steps to the Village College Minibus.Car Share Scheme Co-ordinator invited to speak about it at Ramsey Health Centre. Also member of Community Health Council Transport Working Party. Attempts to ensure that Sawtry can have "Hospital at Home". - 1 - DATES CARESCO History Steps for Swimming Therapy installed in the Purley Pool. Sawtry "Nearly New" Thrift Shop starts First "Special Playscheme". Swimming Therapy starts. Gains Award from 'Village Ventures' CARESCO'S Organiser, Marjorie Dybeck, appointed to Huntingdon Community Health Council by the Regional Health Authority. 1986 CARESCO takes over the Community Print Shop, with its Office in the Homecraft Centre. Cambridgeshire Social Services turns down Grant Application "Because CARESCO has too much money in reserves."! Monthly "Community Lunch" with speakers on various topics. County Council instals moulded steps in the Purley Pool. Joint Finance Grant towards 'Swimming Therapy.' Information Point started, with Packs from CAB. September - Three Year Grant from Cambridgeshire County Council (under a Service Level Agreement.) Review of Projects to check targets, leading to Job Descriptions for all Project Organisers. Budget prepared "to keep a tight rein on expenditure". Distribution of the "Butter Mountain". Parish Council Health Committee set up. Adult Literacy Questionnaire in Alconbury Weston. SAwtry Village College Fourth Year win NATWEST Bank Prize for involvement in Community Projects including Special Playscheme. Sawtry Lunch Club meets on Tuesday (as well as Monday.) 1987 Reorganisation of Cambridgeshire "Home Help" service,(now "Community Care Service,) entails withdrawal of services except in extreme need. Realignment of Cambridgeshire Social Services boundaries to coincide with Health Authority boundaries, cutting Sawtry Village College catchment area in two. "Questions Women Ask" - Forum convened by Dr. Hackman & Shelagh Palmer (Health Promotion.) 1988 Griffiths Report "Community Care - An Agenda for Action" published Review of Projects started. Presentation on the work of CARESCO to Officers and Members of Health, Education & Social Services. Ramp into Homecraft Centre installed. Party at Official Opening. - 2 - DATES CARESCO History SVC Third Year pupils cooked lunch for the Thursday Day Centre members. Fifth Year pupils help Swimming Therapy members. Sawtry Parish Council Health Committee prepares a "Sample Survey" to involve the Community in the preparation of a "Social Plan" for the Village. Fashion Show presented by Sawtry Wives Group, with clothes from the Nearly New Shop. Presentations to 4 special volunteers at a party in National Volunteers Week. Food prepared & served by 4th year pupils from SVC. 1989 CARESCO wins Whitbread Community Care Award. Study Day on the future of CARESCO - led by Angela Hauch (Voluntary Services' Coordinator for Social Services,) at Little Gidding. Day Centre opens at Stilton. Grant from Cambs County Council for salary of a part-time Organiser. Thank-you party for Volunteers. Adaptation of Toilet facilities at Homecraft Centre for use by disabled visitors. 1990 National Health Service and Community Care Act. Meetings of Voluntary Organisations in Huntingdonshire lead to formation of Hunts Forum. 90'th Birthday Party for Elsie Robinson, Sawtry's oldest Carer. Volunteers' Week Outing to Hampton Court. Alconbury Day Centre hires Social Services' Ambulance for some runs. Presentation on CARESCO's Work for Parish, District and County Councillors and Officers. Lunch Club Members take part in local Radio broadcast. 1991 Funds raised to purchase Hoist for Swimming Pool. Volunteers' Week trip to Lincoln. Nearly New/Wives Group Fashion Show. Purchase of reconditioned printer, and fast photocopier for Printshop. 1992 Video showing CARESCO's work completed. "Who Cares for the Carer?" booklet. Food & Hygiene Certificate obtained by 7 volunteers. Stand in "The Living Village." at the Royal Agricultural Show at Stoneleigh. Infants' School Special Concert for Luncheon Club members. "CARESCO" Kneelers presented to All Saints Church. Physiotherapist attends Swimming Therapy sessions regularly. 1993 Informal Carers' Working Party links with local G.P.s to set up Carers' Support Group. - 3 - DATES CARESCO History Transport Survey in partnership with Family Health Services Authority, Huntingdon Health Authority, Health Promotion, Age Concern and local G.P. surgery. 10th Anniversary Party - 150 users and volunteers. Entertainment by Cub Scouts. 1994 Survey of over 2,000 homes in Sawtry to assess need for Domiciliary Care. "Listening" Course for Volunteers. Courses on Working with Adults:- Assertiveness; Disability Awareness; First Aid; Lifting. Courses on the Charities Act, and on Contracting. Organiser attended Women's Institute Conference on "Caring for Rural Carers" at Westminster. Stage 4 of Transport Group Steering Committee. (Changes had already been made locally to reflect local needs of bus passengers.) CARESCO involvement with "Huntingdonshire Holidays" Scheme provides two Sawtry families with holidays. 1995 Sawtry Day Centre hires Social Services Ambulance for Thursday as well as Wednesday. VE Day Anniversary parties for Day Centre members and older volunteers. VJ Day Service of Commemoration for Day Centre members and older volunteers. District Council opens new Swimming Pool in Sawtry Sports Centre. Swimming Therapy continues in Term Time. (Hire charges too expensive during holidays.) Alconbury Day Centre raise #3,000 to refurbish the kitchens at the Sports and Social Club, where they meet. "Confidentiality" training seminar for Volunteers. Homecraft Centre given a "face-lift" by Community Services. Conference - "Postman Pat : a Rural Reality? Alternative solutions to Rural Transport Needs." organised at Sawtry Community College by Hunts Rural Transport Initiative. Keynote Speaker - Sir George Young MP, Secretary of State for Transport. 1996 Governors of Sawtry Community College agree to make land available for a purpose-built Centre for CARESCO. Unsuccessful bid to National Lottery Charities Board for capital funding to build a Centre. Joint Training (with WHOM?) on How to recognise the Abuse of Elders. Review of Lunch Club and Day Centre referrals. (92 people over 80.) Community Information Helpline for Carers launched at a Lunch at Peterborough Town Hall. Visit from Brian Malwhinnie, Parliamentary Candidate for the re-drawn Constituency. Organiser and Print Shop Organiser take part in Community Radio Programme (Huntingdon.) Print Shop takes over publication of "Sawtry Eye". 1997 Grants awarded from Allen Lane Foundation and Chase Charity to enable publication of a "History of CARESCO" as a Case Study of a successful voluntary/statutory - 4 - DATES CARESCO History partnership in a rural area. Review of Stilton Day Centre, and subsequent closure. Repairs to leaking roof of Homecraft Centre. Printshop publishes "A Glimpse into Sawtry's Past." (Sold out within two months!) Sawtry Community College gives notice that Adult Common Room is no longer available for meetings of the Sawtry Day Centre or the Disability Group. Sawtry Day Centre Meetings transferred to the Green Fields Pavilion of the Sawtry Sports Association. Meals cooked at the Homecraft Centre. - 5 -
